Tori Kerr, AYT, Advanced Year Therapist

Tori is an advanced year therapist currently in the final year of her Master’s in Social Work at the University of Maryland Baltimore, where she has been awarded a fellowship for students pursuing clinical work in the field of substance use treatment. She has lived in the Washington, DC area for ten years and obtained her undergraduate degree in English from George Washington University.

Tori has a wide variety of experience in the human services field. She has worked as an after-school counselor, a caseworker at a community legal aid clinic, and a driver for a food-assistance program. She has also volunteered as a pet adoption counselor for an animal rescue. These positions allowed Tori to serve diverse individuals and families across the lifespan in an array of environments, always applying creative problem-solving and empathic listening.

Tori’s therapeutic approach is rooted in nonjudgmental, unconditional positive regard for clients. She utilizes practical, evidence-based modalities including Motivational Interviewing and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy that prioritize the goals and needs of the client. She integrates a social justice framework to behavioral health care, centering a holistic view of clients within their social and physical environments and how cultural identities and structural oppression shape our experiences and struggles.
