Ashwin Jacob Mathai, M.D., Adult Psychiatrist

Dr. Mathai graduated from the DC Department of Behavioral Health-Saint Elizabeths Hospital Psychiatry Residency Training program. He completed an Addiction Psychiatry fellowship from Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York. During training, he served as Chief Resident and won multiple awards including Best Young Investigator and Research Awards. Following training, he fulfilled telepsychiatry roles in both public and private settings in New York. He led, as medical director, an outpatient treatment program for individuals with mental illness and substance use. He currently serves as full-time faculty of the DC DBH Psychiatry Residency Training Program where he is actively involved in the training of medical students and residents. His academic responsibilities contribute significantly to his unwavering commitment to evidence-based medicineHe strictly adheres to a comprehensive treatment philosophy that includes medication management and therapy besides helping patients mitigate symptoms and realize their potential by focusing on sleep, nutrition and wellness. He is an expert in the treatment of depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety, trauma spectrum disorders and OCD.  His research interests include the neurobiology of mood and anxiety disorders and seasonality and has published multiple peer-reviewed research papers.
